Volkswagen Group Rus Launches New Tiguan Production at Kaluga Plant

  • New Tiguan is the first  MQB crossover to be produced in Kaluga

 Volkswagen Group Rus Kaluga plant has launched full cycle production of new  Tiguan, the first MQB (Modulare Querbaukasten) crossover setting new standards of comfort, functionality and design.

The new Tiguan is the first Volkswagen crossover manufactured in Kaluga, which is based on longitudinal engine orientation concept  (MQB  – Modulare Querbaukasten). This module strategy offers a number of advantages, including standard placement of an engine, unifies connections and systems, small size. This gives Volkswagen an opportunity to fully realize cost-saving potential, significantly increase production efficiency. Apart from that designers will enjoy more freedom while creating dynamic and well-proportioned vehicles.

Volkswagen Group Rus  has expanded its production facilities in Kaluga to launch production of the second generation of Tiguan model. A new body shop (12,000 sq.m) was built and equipped. Volkswagen Group invested EUR 180 million in total to launch Tiguan production. These investments were used to develop the plant infrastructure, to build the body shop, and to renovate paint and assembly shops. The plant expansion will result in creation of additional 110 jobs. Volkswagen Group has also invested in development and training programs for suppliers of tools and components so that their products meet Volkswagen high quality standards.   

New Tiguan production includes body welding, painting and assembly operations. For the first time a model produced locally Volkswagen Group Rus Kaluga plant will have a panoramic roof. Furthermore, the new Tiguan production envisages the use of laser technologies, innovative systems for component delivery to the assembly line, for instance, a free hanging system delivering car underside to the automatic welding section.   

Markus Ozegovic, Director General, Volkswagen Group Rus, said: “Significant investments in new Tiguan production prove our long-term commitment to the Russian market. Our new body shop and additional jobs  promote the implementation of our local strategy. We believe, that new Tiguan by  Volkswagen will become a bestseller crossover in the Russian market”.

The first new Tiguans are to be delivered to Russian dealers in Q1 2017.
