The airport is a part of Freight Village Vorsino; it is located in close proximity to borders of New Moscow, at 95 km from the center of Moscow and at 91 km from Kaluga. In addition to low-cost air transport, the airport is intended to become major center for cargo handling.
Before December 2012 Ermolino Airport was used by internal troops of the Ministry for Internal Affairs, then, upon Russian Government decree it became joint airdrome used also by UTair airlines. The carrier and Kaluga authorities perform design of the civil sector of the airdrome. At the same time the Ministry for Internal Affairs works on the airdrome renovation project. Commissioning is scheduled for 2017; the airport will serve 7.5 mln of passengers annually by 2021. It is planned that the airdrome will have C category under ICAO classification, thus allowing hosting all types of modern commercial aircrafts. Total tarmac surface will be equal to 250,000 m2, 40 apron places are planned, and airport acceptance rate will be 2,400 passengers per hour.
