Dmitry Medvedev Attends Opening Ceremony at Next Generation Metallurgy Plant near Obninsk

On July 23, 2013 Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation,  laid the foundation for revival of Kaluga Region metallurgy. He attended the official opening ceremony at NLMK Kaluga next generation electric metallurgy plant located in Vorsino Industrial Park.  

NLMK Kaluga plant commissioning is to reduce a deficit in rolled steel production capacity existing in the  Central Federal District and supply high quality steel products to the Central Federal District construction industry.  

Delivering a speech at the opening ceremony Dmitry Medvedev pointed out that the new plant was an innovative production facility. He said: “I am very impressed by what I have seen.  This is a modern industrial facility and it is environmentally friendly, which is of great importance as this is a metallurgical plant. The new production facility employs highly qualified people, who came from different regions of Russia. I hope the new plant will become a new home for them, especially taking into account the fact that the company offers various social benefits, including modern residential premises”.   

NLMK Kaluga plant is located in Vorsino Industrial Park.  The new electric metallurgy plant has a capacity of 1.5 million t of steel and 0.9 million t of rolled products per annum. Currently the company has adequate sources of raw materials, namely ferrous metal scrap. The highly efficient plant manufacturing quality rolled products employs modern environmentally friendly technologies. The plant gas treatment system removes 99% of the plant emissions. NLMK Kaluga  has created 1,250 new jobs at the plant and almost 600 auxiliary    jobs Five multi-apartment residential buildings have been built near the plant for its employees. NLMK Kaluga is one of the largest Vorsino Industrial Park residents. In the near future Freight Village Kaluga multimodal logistics center is to be commissioned there and the project associated with Ermolino Airport development is to commence

The letter of congratulations by Russian President Vladimir Putin was read out at the official ceremony. It says: “The new production facility commissioning is another proof of the facts that Kaluga Region is an attractive territory for investors and it efficiently develops as a modern industrial center. New jobs, high and green technologies applied at the new plant will further promote Kaluga Region economy modernization and will make a significant donation to expansion of the Central Russia industrial development. I am positive that this ceremony will become the beginning of the new plant successful and long history. And Kaluga Region will continue to demonstrate a good example of trustworthy and mutually beneficial cooperation with the business community”.
