On June 2-5, the Kaluga Region delegation led by the Governor Vladislav Shapsha will take part in the XXIV St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. SPIEF is a unique event in the economics and business world. It has been held since 1997, and since 2006 it has been held under the sponsorship of and with the aid of the President of the Russian Federation.

The main business program of SPIEF’21 includes more than a hundred events in four thematic areas dedicated to the global and Russian economies, social and technological agendas. The main topic of the Forum is “Together Again – Economy of New Reality”.

The Kaluga Region delegation will take part in discussions and negotiations with partners, world business leaders, representatives of the international political arena. 

Kaluga Region has been participating in the SPIEF since 2007. This is not only an opportunity for the region to participate in discussing current issues, but a mechanism to expand business cooperation. Over the years, the forum helped entities conclude agreements with Samsung, Volvo, Novo Nordisk, Nestle, OMIA URAL and others. These are operating production facilities today with new jobs, modern technologies, and contributions to the regional budget. In 2019, the investor base was completed with four more companies with a total investment of over 13 billion rubles. A number of enterprises – in particular, Naturel – are already under active construction.

In 2021, it is planned to sign new investment agreements on the implementation of projects. Negotiations are in progress with companies from the light and food industries, the pharmaceutical industry, the construction industry, and logistics.

The SPIEF Investment & Business Expo is being held as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Infrastructure and investment projects of the Kaluga Region, contributing to the development of modern high-tech industries and traditional industrial enterprises, will be presented as part of a single Russian exhibition area. In particular, 12 industrial parks, Kaluga Industrial Special Economic Zone, two territories of advanced social and economic development Sosensky and Kondrovo, the transport and logistics system of the region, Freight Village RU multimodal complex, One Belt One Road export projects, and centers of technological competence of industry clusters. 

Almost 80% of new enterprises are placed in 12 industrial parks of the Kaluga Region. 223 investment projects from more than 30 countries of the world are being implemented on the territory of the region. 116 enterprises have been opened since 2006. 10 industry clusters have been formed, including a pharmaceutical one, a cluster of composite and ceramic technologies, an agro-industrial, automotive, transport and logistics ones, a cluster of building materials, and a metalworking cluster.

Both Russian and foreign manufactures of world-famous companies work successfully in the cluster format in the region. Large international companies strive to develop the long-term distributed manufacturing strategy and demonstrate commitment to the Russian market by expanding capacities, increasing the range of products and developing cooperation ties with local suppliers.

Novo Nordisk continues to invest in the modernization and development of the enterprise, and is preparing to localize the production of the latest generation insulin preparations. A package of ultrafast insulin, including the assembly of prefilled syringe pens, and the production of a finished dosage form of this drug are planned to be produced already by this June. Thanks to the company’s activities, the latest drugs will become more affordable for Russian patients. Novo Nordisk in the Kaluga Region is the only plant in Russia that produces a full portfolio of modern insulins.

The Kaluga enterprise L’Oréal started to build new production sites in March 2016, and the plant began to produce skin care products in July 2017. In 2018, a new part of the L’Oréal plant successfully passed the world’s most stringent LEED Version 4 Certification System for Green and Energy-Efficient Building Construction and was awarded with LEED v4 Platinum Certificate by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The performance of products manufactured in the Kaluga Region is supported by their demand in the world arena. Experimental Instrumentation Plant has proved to be one of the leaders not only in the Russian market, but in the international one in the development and production of Pandora/Pandect electronic service and anti-theft devices. Since 2012, the company produces Pandora LED Lighting such as street, long-distance, industry, sports, tunnel lighting fixtures, search lights, zoo- and phytolights, and various special designs– explosion-proof, vibration- and earthquake-resistant ones. They differ from their counterparts of high light efficiency, quality of constructive development and the highest degree of automation.

In the metallurgical industry, VMK INVEST (Kaluga) is one of the ten leading Russian producers of aluminum profiles. The company’s products are export-oriented to substitute import. The export share is 12%. In 2019, VMK INVEST became the winner of the federal competition ‘Leader of High Technologies’ in the ‘Metallurgical Industry’ category. The profiles produced at the plant in Kaluga have been applied in the architectural solutions of such objects as the Lakhta Center, the ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre, the buildings in the Moscow City complex, and the KULA TOWER in Belgrade.

A high-quality transport and logistics complex in the region provides companies with direct access to international transport corridors. The first multimodal complexes of the ‘freight village’ format were established in the Kaluga Region.

Freight Village Vorsino today is the largest transit hub in the central part of Russia between Europe and Asia, which allows to significantly reduce the cost of cargo transportation and to cut delivery times by three times. The terminal uses advanced technologies for handling container cargo. The time slotting system, which was introduced in 2019 and updated in 2020, promotes rapid and the most accurate work planning of all participants in the transportation process. In 2021, the new West Container Terminal was opened, which distinguishing feature is 2 modern Liebherr RMG Goliath Cranes for Container Handling. The launch of the new container terminal made it possible to increase the total capacity of the Vorsino Terminal to 350 thousand TEU per year and to expand the capacity of one-time storage up to 9 thousand TEU.

Not only Kaluga companies enjoy the freight village, but the enterprises operating in other constituent entities of the Russian Federation. In 2016, Freight Village Vorsino became part of the One Belt One Road project. The routes are constantly geographically expanding. Having started from one direction in 2016, cargo transportation is carried out today from nine ports in China, cities of Vietnam, Japan, Mongolia, India, Latvia and Belarus.
