NLMK-Kaluga, a new-generation electrometallurgical plant (part of NLMK Group’s Long Products Division Russia), has implemented a new digital service powered by machine vision and artificial intelligence to determine the type and quality of scrap delivered to the plant. The solution saves time when controlling incoming products, increases the turnover of wagons, and improves the quality of interaction with suppliers.

Industrial cameras installed at the NLMK-Kaluga pre-production site are able to stream the video to the system, which analyzes each unloaded layer of raw materials in all wagons. The service can also stop unloading the prohibited items, such as rubber and cast iron batteries, and recognize the potentially explosive cargo.

The service makes an accurate analysis of each delivery of scrap and generates a report for each wagon. All photos and videos linked to the wagon register are kept in the history. The suppliers of NLMK Group have access to the raw materials acceptance reports with layer-by-layer photos of the wagon unloading.

In 2022, the digital service will be available at the NLMK Group’s production site in Lipetsk, and later on at other Group enterprises.
