Valentina Matvienko Highly Praises Kaluga Regions Successful Approaches in the Field of Family Policy

On May 30, 2013 Valentina Matvienko, who holds the position of the Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation as well as the Chairperson of the Coordination Council for National Strategy for the Benefit of Children for 2012-2017, paid a working visit to Kaluga Region.

On the eve of the International Day for Protection of Children Valentina Matvienko together with Governor Anatoly Artamonov visited a number of children centers located in Kaluga Region, including Doverie, a rehabilitation facility for disabled children and teenagers located in Obninsk, a corporate child care facility belonging to a major Russian bank, Til child care center belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church, and Orion, a non-for-profit partnership of step parents from Zhukov District.  

Valentina Matvienko paid a visit to Doverie, a rehabilitation facility for disabled children and teenagers located in Obninsk . The facility is engaged in rehabilitation of physically impaired children, and children suffering mental diseases. Apart from that the center also renders assistance to their families. The center elaborates unique programs to rehabilitate children suffering Down syndrome and to provide psychological and pedagogical support to their families.  

And it is no mere chance that Valentina Matvienko has chosen Kaluga Region. Governor Anatoly Artamonov spoke of major successes in the field of social and family policy in the region. The number of orphanages in Kaluga Region decreased drastically, and the number of foster homes grew significantly. Active measures are taken to provide residential premises to orphans. Currently 10 types of compensations and allowances are paid to families with children from the local budget.   Over 1 billion will be paid in 2012.   

Valentina Matvienko  said: "Kaluga Region has accumulated vast interesting experience in the field of social policy and children support programs. This may serve as a basis for specific legal decisions and efficient legislative initiatives".
