The First Container Train Arrives from Turkey to Russia

February 9: The first container train arrived at the Freight Village Vorsino Terminal in Kaluga Oblast of Russia. The train travelled from Turkey along the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars international rail link (BTK).

JSC RZhD Logistics (associated company of RZhD) and Turkish logistic operator Pasifik Eurasia Logistics (PASİFİK EURASİA LOJİSTİK DIŞ TİCARET A.Ş.) arranged the train dispatch.

Loaded with fifteen 40-Ft containers with household appliances (dishwashing machines and gas ovens), the train started from Marshandiz station in the Turkish capital Ankara to Akhalkalaki border station in Georgia. The containers were transshipped from 1435 mm gauge platforms to the broader 1520 mm platforms, and then the train proceeded via Georgia and Azerbaijan to the destination point in Vorsino, Russia (Kaluga Oblast).

Launching of the train container service between Turkey and Russia opens new opportunities for delivering cargos along a seamless overland route, which ensures high speed and safety of transportation.

In May 2019, the heads of the railway companies of Russia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan signed the trilateral Memorandum of Cooperation in the development of rail transportation.

It provides for cooperative actions on ensuring the regular railway transportations along the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars route, including implementation of the economically justified tariffs and attraction of a new freight base.
